Summary:PURPOSE:To enhance the reliability of the measured result of the distance to an object, by processing the image data, which are obtained by two TV camera, by a microcomputer. CONSTITUTION:Image data for one screen, which are obtained by TV cameras 1a and 1b, are stored in image memory means 3a and 3b having two-dimensional address spaces temporarily in two systems. A block recognizing means 11 compares the image data stored in the image memory means between the neighboring addresses, forms a block of regions having the same image data, shifts one address of the blocks in the two systems in the direction where parallax is decreased by a specified amount, performs the address shifting so that the block in the two systems agree and thus recognizes a block pair. A distance operating means 12 operates the distance to the corresponding object with the address shifting amount of the block pair as the parallax.
