Summary:PURPOSE:To enhance the reliability of the measured result of the distance to an object, by processing image data by using a microcomputer and software. CONSTITUTION:Image data for one screen, which are obtained by two TV cameras 1a and 1b, are stored in image memory means 3a and 3b, temporarily. The image memory means 3a and 3b are connected to a microcomputer having various operating means 11, 12 and 13. In the microcomputer, the characteristics operating means 11, which compares the image data between the neighboring addresses, forms a block of parts having the same image data and operates the characteristics data and the characteristic-point addresses with respect to each block, is provided. The block-pair recognizing means 12 compares the characteristics data of each block, which is classified for every image memory means in said two system and recognizes the set of the blocks, whose characteristics data agree as a block pair for the same object. The distance operating means 13 judges the difference of the characteristic-point addresses of said block pair as parallax and operates the distance to the object.
