PURPOSE:To obtain a video signal transmitter in quick response to a faulty transmission by transmitting a specific pattern in place of a video signal transmitted so far when an operating fault of a video signal generating section is detected. CONSTITUTION:When an image pickup device 1 is faulty and the video signal is interrupted, the interruption of the video signal is detected by a signal interruption detecting circuit 6, resulting that a switch circuit 8 is changed over from the position of the image pickup device 1 to the position of a pattern generator 7. Then a test pattern signal generated by the pattern generator 7 is fed to a frame memory 22 in place of a video signal of the image pickup device 1 transmitted so far, stored and then the test pattern signal is transmitted to an attended station via a transmission line 3. Thus, the test pattern is displayed on a monitor of the attended station and a supervisor recognizes generation of a fault by observing the display.
