Summary:PURPOSE:To enable accurate detection free from the effect of pressure, by adjusting the amount of a standard gas to be fed to a measuring gas chamber so that the pressure of a gas to be measured outside equals the pressure of the standard gas inside in a diaphragm of a hydrogen or steam detection element. CONSTITUTION:A measuring gas chamber 1 is provided with a diaphragm 3 which comprises a hydrogen or steam detection element mainly composed of strontium oxide and cerium oxide. A measuring gas is brought into contact with an external elextrode 3b of the diaphragm while a reference gas with an internal electrode 3a to detect hydrogen or steam. The standard gas is also sent to the measuring chamber 1 through a standard gas chamber 6, a pump 5 and an adjuster 4. Then, when the pressure of the measuring gas outside 1a the diaphragm is higher than th pressure of the standard gas inside 2a the diaphragm, a needle valve 10 is loosened to send more of the standard gas to the chamber of gas to be measured until both the gas pressures equal. In the opposite case, the needle valve 10 is tightened. Thus, highly accurate detection of hydrogen or the like can be done by adjusting the gas pressures on both sides of the diaphragm to be equal.
