Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having the large coercive force in the direction perpendicular to the film plane and large vertical anisotropic magnetic field by adjusting the chromium content in a thin magnetic film contg. cobalt and chromium on a non-magnetic substrate to 18-24wt% and segregation rate to >=20%. CONSTITUTION:The chromium content in the thin magnetic film contg. cobalt and chromium on the non-magnetic substrate is adjusted to 18-24wt% and the segregation rate to >=20%. The vertical anisotropic magnetic field decreases when the chromium content is below 20% and the coercive force Hcrt. angle in the direction perpendicular to the film plane decreases when said content exceeds 24%. The coercive force decreases when the segregation rate exceeds 40%. The recording medium of the thin magnetic film having the large coercive force in the direction perpendicular to the film plane and large vertical anisotropic magnetic field is thus obtd.
