Summary:PURPOSE:To facilitate the start in a cold region and prevent the imperfect combustion after start and obtain a lightweight and small-sized apparatus by preheating the starting intake by utilizing the exothermic reaction of the metal hydride which occludes hydrogen and preheating said intake by an electric heater after start. CONSTITUTION:A hydrogen flow valve 7 is opened and an electric heater 9 in the second passage 1b is put into electric conduction at the same time. Then, the metal hydrides (MH1) in an intake preheater 4 occludes hydrogen and generates the heat to heat the intake and facilitates the start of an engine 8. When an adjusting valve 3 is opened on start, the intake preheated in a heater 9 is supplied, and the opening degree of the adjusting valve 3 is increased in accordance with the number of revolutions, and the number of revolutions can be smoothly increased. The electric heater 9 stops after the electric conduction for about 1min. Then, heating is carried out by an electric heater installed in the preheater 4, and hydrogen is liberated from MH1 and recovered into a storage container 6, and the start at the next time is prepared. Thus, the starting operation is facilitated by the utilization of MH1, and the imperfect combustion is prevented by preheating by the electric heater, and the apparatus can be made markedly small-sized and lightweight as a whole.
