Summary:PURPOSE:To prevent the lack of hiding and sag on the coated surface and to obtain a desired coating pattern by moving up and down and reciprocating over the coating width a bell-type electrostatic coater by a reciprocator and controlling the number of revolutions etc., of the bell in accordance with the discharge of paint. CONSTITUTION:Reciprocators 3R and 3L each equipped with a bell-type electrostatic coater 2 are arranged oppositely to each other on both sides of the transfer line of an automobile body 1 when the side surface of the automobile body is coated. The bell-type electrostatic coaters 2 are moved up and down by the reciprocators 3R and 3L in follow-up to the change in the shape of the side surface part of the body 1. The coaters are also reciprocated over the stroke corresponding to the coating width of the side surface changing with time. Simultaneously, the discharge of paint from the electrostatic coater 2 is varied in accordance with the change in the coating width and the number of revolutions and/or shaving pressure are varied in accordance with the change in the discharge of paint. A desired pattern is thus obtained.
