Summary:PURPOSE:To reduce an optical coupling and branching device and an optical multiplexer and demultiplexer in size by cutting clad parts of two optical fibers in flat surfaces and adhering those flat surfaces to each other, and forming the optical coupling and branching device and optical multiplexer and demultiplexer which utilize evanescent effect. CONSTITUTION:The optical coupling and branching device is formed by cutting clads 12 and 13 of optical fibers 10 and 11 between cores 14 and 15 at specific distance together with a substrate 9 and adhering and fixing cut surfaces to each other by using an adhesive. The optical multiplexer and demultiplexer, on the other hand, is constituted having an interference film 20 interposed between flat surfaces of the clads 12 and 13. The two optical fibers 10 and 11 are adhered to necessary coupling length L to manufacture the optical coupling and branching device and optical multiplexer and demultiplexer.
