Summary:PURPOSE:To provide an industrially useful additive for an aqueous slurry of solid fuel, effective to decrease the viscosity of the slurry and stabilize the slurry for a long period, by using a copolymer containing a specific constitution unit at a specific ratio, as an active component. CONSTITUTION:The objective additive contains, as an active component, the copolymer having an average molecular weight of 2,000-10,000 and containing the units of formulas I -III [R1-R4 are H, 1-22 C alkyl or phenyl; M is H, alkali or alkaline earth metal, (alkyl)ammonium, or alkanolammonium; X is polyoxyalkylene alkyl(phenyl) ether or polyoxyalkylene alkenyl ether; the equivalent ratio of M:X is 1:1-9:1)] as the constituent units wherein the molar ratio of (the unit of formula I ):(formula II+III) is 1:2-5:1.
