Summary:NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [R is 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy; R is -COR (R is 3-6C cycloalkyl), -CONHR (R is 1-4C alkyl or 2-4C alkenyl) or -SO2R ]. EXAMPLE:The compound of formula II. USE:An agricultural and horticultural fungicide. It exhibits excellent effect especially against late blight of tomato, rice blast, powdery mildew of barley, etc., and strong antimicrobial activity against phytopathogenic phycomycete, ascomycete, basidiomycete, imperfect fungi, and bacteria. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I wherein R is -COR can be produced in high efficiency, by reacting the nucleus-substituted benzothiazolone of formula III with the acid halide of formula R COX(X is halogen) in an inert solvent such as acetone, preferably in the presence of a base such as triethylamine, heating close to the boiling point of the solvent for 1-10hr.
