Summary:PURPOSE:To take a high-precision measurement of roundness on a machine tool without requiring any high-precision rotating device by calculating the roundness error of an object to be measured as the distance from such an imaginary circle that the mean value of the square of a roundness error at each measurement point is minimum. CONSTITUTION:The surface ruggedness of the body 1 to be measured is measured by three detectors A, B, and C over one turn and their meaurement data are processed to compensate a measurement error due to the rotary motion, finding the roundness shape. The roundness error of the measured body 1 is obtained from the distance from such an imaginary circle that the mean value of the square of an error at each measurement point is minimum, so that this method is applicable for the measurement of the roundness shape of a cylindrical or columnar work on an actual machine tool wherein center deviation in the installation of the measured body 1 and runout rotation of a rotary shaft in the roundness measurement can not be disregarded.
