Summary:PURPOSE:To extend the working life of a starting device using a battery as a power supply for a portable computer having a communication function, by detecting a request signal for starting power supply to start the actuation of a power supply circuit and executing the prescribed program processing. CONSTITUTION:A main body 1 of a portable computer is connected to a telephone circuit TL via an MODEM2 to transmit data. The main body 1 has a battery power supply 3 and an AC adaptor 4 to be used for commercial power supply. When a ring signal is inputted through the circuit TL, it is detected by the MODEM2, and the MODEM2 delivers an action signal to the main body 1. An attention control circuit 107 starts a power supply circuit 100 with the action signal. When the circuit 100 is started and reaches a normal and stable level of voltage, the main body 1 executes the prescribed program processing. Thus it is not required to always keep a power supply on. This can extend substantially the working life of a starting device using a battery as a power supply.
