Summary:PURPOSE:The reactor tube is filled with a powder mixture of SiO2 and C or granules therefrom, and Cl2 is fed wherein the feed of the starting material is controlled depending on the CO2 content in the product gas to achieve high-efficiency production of SiCl4. CONSTITUTION:The starting material is prepared by mixing SiO2 such as silica rock with C such as coke at a ratio in a range of 1<C/SiO2<3 or granulating the mixture in the presence of water and a water-soluble binder into particles of less than 1/3 diameter of the reactor. Then, the starting material is charged from the tank 1 in the reactor 2, then heated with electric furnace 6 so that the temperature inside the reactor tube 2 becomes 1,000-1,300 deg.C. Simultaneously Cl2 gas is fed through the pipe 4 into the tube 2 and the product gas is taken out of the system through the pipe 3. The gas is sampled through the valve 5 to detect CO2 content to control the feed rate so that the content is kept in the range from 0.1 to 10vol%.
