Summary:NEW MATERIAL:The dienol ester of formula I (R -R are H or lower alkyl; m is 1 or 2; n is 0-2; A is group of formula II or formula III; Z is halogen or lower acyloxy). EXAMPLE:7-Chloro-3,3,5,5,8-pentamethyl-1,8-nonadien-4-yl acetate. USE:Useful as a synthetic intermediate of a bicyclic alcohol or its lower aliphatic monocarboxylic acid ester having typical woody note suggesting vetiver-like perfume and cedar-wood-like perfume, and useful as a perfumery component of various perfumery compositions. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced either by reacting the ester of formula IV with tertiary butyl hypohalite of formula (CH3)3COX (X is halogen), or reacting with hypochlorous acid in water or in a two-phase system comprising water and a water-immiscible organic solvent.
