Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the reliability of the titled system by so controlling as deciding that control is exercised without error as long as the reading gain control succeeds at a certain tape driving speed although said gain control fails at another driving speed. CONSTITUTION:Flag bits 403 and 404 of high and low speeds respectively are read and tested by a control part 10 for all tracks of a memory map 40. It is decided that the control fails with both speeds when the bits 403 and 404 of all tracks are set at 1. Then an error is reported to an upper rank device. If 1 is not detected with either one of both speeds, the corresponding speed is set to a control register 41 from the part 10 as a speed system having a normal end. Then a reel motor is driven through a motor servo control circuit 42 to read a normal data block.
