Summary:PURPOSE:To prepare a polymeric emulsifier consisting mainly of a specific unsaturated polyester, capable of stabilizing emulsion polymerization, giving an emulsion having improved stability and pigment-miscibility, and giving a water-resistant, weather-resistant and heat-resistant coating film. CONSTITUTION:A polymeric emulsifier consisting mainly of an unsaturated polyester having a number average molecular weight of 500-6,000 and an acid value of >=20, preferably 30-200, and prepared by the esterification reaction of a long chain unsaturated dibasic acid HOOC-R-COOH(R is >=8C hydrocarbon having one or more unsaturated groups) (pref. 7-hexadecene-1,14-dicarboxylic acid, etc.) with a dihydric alcohol. For example, the emulsifier is dissolved in water together with a neutralizing agent, e.g. ammonia, etc., and the aqueous solution is heated to 50-90 deg.C. Subsequently, a polymerization initiator and an emulsion-polymerizable monomer, e.g. butyl acrylate, etc., are added and reacted to give a synthetic resin emulsion.
