Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the rate of character recognition by detecting the head peak position of a character through an analog detecting means and a digital detecting means. CONSTITUTION:The 1st peak position detecting means 1 consisting of an analog circuit means detects the peak position of an analog character read signal from said signal, and the 1st head peak position detecting means 2 detects the head peak position of the character from the peak positon. The 2nd head peak position detecting means 3 detects the head peak position of the character from digitized data of the character read signal. Then, a character recognizing means 4 performs the character recognition by using the head peak positions of the character detected by the 1st and 2nd head peak position detecting means 2 and 3.
