Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the rate of character recognition by setting a character head on the basis of timing pulses synchronizing with the running speed of a card in case of a failure in the detection of the character head, etc. CONSTITUTION:A character readout signal from a magnetic head 13 is sampled by an analog/digital converter 16 with sampling pulses from a CPU 17, and stored in a RAM 18. The interval from the front end of the card to the 1st character head on the card and intervals between character heads of characters on the card correspond to intervals of time when a predetermined number of timing pulses are generated. The time intervals are measured by counting the sampling pulses from the CPU 17 to measure the interval from the card front end to the 1st character head and intervals between respective character heads, which are stored in an RAM 25.
