Summary:PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound useful for the production of a synthetic intermediate of vitamin B1, etc., in high yield, by reacting a 3,3-dialkoxypropanenitrile with an alkyl formate in the presence of an alkali metal alcoholate. CONSTITUTION:The objective 2-alkali formyl-3,3-dialkoxypropanenitrile is produced by reacting (A) 3,3-dialkoxypropanenitrile or 3-alkoxy-2-propenenitrile (e.g. 3-methoxy-2-propenenitrile) with (B) an alkyl formate (e.g. methyl formate, ethyl formate, etc.) in the presence of (C) an alkali metal alcoholate (e.g. sodium methylate, potassium methylate, etc.). The nitrile can be converted to a synthetic intermediate of vitamin B1 and its analog by reacting first with an alkylating agent and then with acetamidine.
