Summary: | PURPOSE:To form an optical fiber preform having uniform longitudinal refractive index distribution, by inserting an exhaust tube into a glass tube just after the soot-sintering zone, and transferring the exhaust tube at the same speed as the transfer speed of the heat source. CONSTITUTION:The exhaust tube 14 is inserted into the glass tube 10 in a manner to position the opened end of the exhaust tube just after the sintering zone 12a of the soot 12. The exhaust tube 14 is transferred toward the exhaust side of the glass tube 10 at the same speed as the transfer speed of the heat source 13. The opened end 14a of the exhaust tube 14 is maintained constantly at the sintering zone 12a of the soot, and the unnecessary glass particles in the glass tube 10 is sucked into the exhaust tube 14 to prevent the deposition of the particles on the exhaust-side inner wall of the glass tube 10. Accordingly, a preform having uniform longitudinal refractive index distribution and outer diameter can be manufactured. |
