Summary:PURPOSE:To prepare industrially and advantageously an optically active 1-(4- phenoxyphenoxy)propan-2-ol having a high optical purity, by using an esterase produced by a microorganism or derived from animal internal organs. CONSTITUTION:An esterase produced by a microorganism or derived from animal internal organs is reacted with an ester of (+ or -)-1-(4-phenoxyphenoxy)propan- 2-ol with a 1-18C saturated or unsaturated organic carboxylic acid at 10-70 deg.C, and the resultant product is asymmetrically hydrolyzed and resolved into optically active 1-(4-phenoxyphenoxy)propan-2-ol and an antipodal ester thereof.
