Summary:PURPOSE:To improve scanning efficiency, and shorten a beam scanning time and increase the printing speed of a printer according to characteristics of characters and graphic forms by varying the shape of a circular light spot formed on the surface of a photosensitive drum. CONSTITUTION:A light beam from a light source 1 is collimated by an optical collimator system 2 into a circular parallel light beam, which is made incident to a luminous flux modulator 6. The luminous flux modulator 6 consists of two cylindrical lenses, and consequently the circular luminous flux is converted into elliptic luminous flux with a different ratio of the major and minor axis. This elliptic luminous flux is passed through a polygon scanner 3 and an f.theta optical system 4 to form an elliptic light spot on the image formation surface of the photosensitive drum 5. consequently, even when the scanning speed in the row direction is constant, the frequency of scanning for pattern painting is reduced and the time of graphic formation is shortened in proportion to the decrease in the scanning frequency.
