Summary:PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound which is an intermediate for medicines, agricultural chemicals and dyes, etc. industrially and advantageously in short steps, by reacting m-(2-hydroxy-2-propyl)acetophenone with H2O2 in the presence of an acid catalyst, and decomposing the reaction product with an acid. CONSTITUTION:m-(2-Hydroxy-2-propyl)acetophenone as a raw material compound is reacted with 5-90wt% aqueous hydrogen peroxide in a molar amount of 1- 20 times of that of the raw material compound in the presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid, at 30-95 deg.C to give m-(2-hydroperoxy- 2-propyl)acetophenone, which is then decomposed with an acid to afford the aimed m-hydroxyacetophenone. The m-(2-hydroxy-2-propyl)acetophenone which is the starting compound is obtained by reacting m-(2-hydroxy-2-propyl)cumene hydroperoxide in the presence of an aqueous solution containing an iron salt, copper salt and a mineral acid.
