Summary:PURPOSE:To detect accurately the variation in surface potential during the electrostatic charging of a photosensitive drum by applying a specific voltage to an electrode, and generating a standard potential at the photosensitive drum, and comparing the detected voltage of the surface potential with the detected value of the standard potential by a potential sensor. CONSTITUTION:The specific voltage is applied to the electrode 40 under the command of a CPU52 to generate the standard potential corresponding to the target potential of the photosensitive drum 3, and it is detected by the potential sensor 4. The detected value of the standard potential is outputted and stored in the CPU52, and the direction of the potential sensor 4 is returned to the side of the photosensitive drum 3; and the surface potential of the photosensitive drum 3 charged electrostatically by a main charging part 30 is detected by the potential sensor 4 and outputted to the CPU52. Then, the CPU52 compares the detected value of the standard potential with the detected value of the surface potential to detect the variation in surface potential during the charging of the photosensitive drum 3. Consequently, even if the potential sensor 4 decreases in sensitivity owing to stain, etc., the variation in the surface potential during the charging of the photosensitive drum 3 is detected accurately all the time.
