Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a parent material of focusing optical fiber in good reproducibility, by making a silicon compound and a doping agent to flow from the central part of a concentric multiple pipe, forming porous sintered silica, heat- treating it so that distribution of the doping agent is controlled. CONSTITUTION:A raw material consisting of a silicon compound and a doping agent is subjected to flame hydrolysis by oxyhydrogen flame, etc., to form porous sintered silica whose doping agent concentration is reduced successively from the center to the outer periphery. It is then heat-treated in a gas atmosphere wherein it can be reacted with the doping agent, distribution of the doping agent is controlled, and it is converted into transparent glass. The preparation of the porous sintered silica is carried out by a method wherein a raw material gas is fed from the central part of an integrated concentric multiple pipe burner, and it is subjected to flame hydrolysis. A gas used for the gas atmosphere is diluted with an inert gas such as argon, nitrogen, helium, etc. and used, and its concentration is usually 0.1-15vol%.
