Summary:PURPOSE:To effect a surface treatment of a polymer web while preventing surface accidents without detriment to adhesiveness, by subjecting the polymer web to a vacuum glow discharge treatment, and then cooling the web at a temperature above its glass transition point by means of a cooling roll under a specified temperature condition. CONSTITUTION:One surface of a polymer web 5 which is fed from a feeder 3 while it is being preheated by a preheating/driving roll 18 is first subjected to a vacuum glow discharge treatment by a discharge electrode 1a, then the web is turned upside-down by guide rolls 6 and 7, and the other surface of the web is subjected to a vacuum glow discharge treatment by a discharge electrode 1b. Then, the polymer web 5 is subjected to a cooling treatment by cooling rolls 19a, 19b, and 19c, and wound around a winding member 4. The above cooling treatment is carried out so that the following relationships may be satisfied at temperatures above the glass transition point: T1<=T0-40; T2<=T1-40; and T3<=T2-40, wherein T1 ( deg.C), T2 ( deg.C), and T3 ( deg.C) are the temperatures at cooling rolls 19a, 19b, and 19c, respectively, and T0 ( deg.C) is the initial temperature of the polymer web after the discharge treatment.
