Summary:PURPOSE:To improve dispersibility, low foamability and miscibility by using a water soluble copolymer of a cycloolefinic monomer and an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride as a pigment dispersant for coating. CONSTITUTION:A cycloolefinic monomer such as Diels-Alder derivatives of cycloalkenes, cyclodienes, and cyclopentadiene and an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride are copolymerized in an org. solvent by using a polymerization initiator, and after the distillation of solvent, the copolymer is neutralized by a caustic alkali, whereby a water soluble copolymer is obtained. Although it is preferable to use this copolymer as an alkali metal salt such as Na or K salt or NH4 salt, partly use of alkaline earth salt or unneutralized copolymer may be also possible. This copolymer salt has low foamability, has high dispersion effect for various pigments and is further superior in blending with various resins.
