Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the resistance of a high-strength low-alloy steel to cracking due to plating at its weld heat-affected zone, by regulating the S content of the steel to a specified range. CONSTITUTION:0.030-0.060% S is added to a low alloy steel having >=55kg/mm. strength and a composition contg. 0.04-0.11% C, 0.90-1.70% Mn, 0.05-0.30% Si, 0.01-0.08% Nb, 0.02-0.09% V, 0.005-0.030% Ti and 0.005-0.050% Al and satisfying relation represented by 93-8.8X10 C(C-0.1)-63Si-38Mn+340V>=25 among the components. The resulting high-strength low-alloy steel does not cause cracking due to plating at its weld heat-affected zone.
