Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain an IR fiber which is easy to manufacture by providing a covering layer of a resin which allows the transmission of IR rays in the position near the incident surface in tight contact with the outside circumferential surface of the fiber. CONSTITUTION:An IR fiber 1 consists of a crystal of metallic halide, and is produced by extrusion molding. The coating layer 2 provided in tight contact with the outside circumferential surface of the fiber 1 has the end face 3 on the same plane as the incident face 4 of the fiber 1. The substantial area of the incident face increases with an increase in the thickness of said covering layer by which a larger quantity of IR rays can be made incident to the fiber. A condenser lens 5 condenses the IR rays radiated from an object to be measured of temp. and makes the same incident to the face 4 of the fiber and the end face 3 of the covering layer. The fiber having the covering layer of a uniform thickness is obtainable with the easier operation by using a heat shrinkable tube and using a method of inserting the fiber into the tube of a prescribed length and heat treating the same so as to shrink the tube in tight contact with the outside circumferential surface of the fiber in producing the fiber.
