Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the reliability of shape recognition by changing and measuring a slice level which is a floating threshold for projected data to a reference line with a recognizing device and extracting an interest area. CONSTITUTION:A video signal inputted by a television camera 4 is inputted to an A/D converter circuit 6 and converted into a binary code by a binary coding control circuit 7 and the two-dimensional pattern is compressed to a pair of one- dimensional pattern information by a projection processing circuit 8 and inputted to a microcomputer. The pattern recognizing device is constituted by a decision control circuit, i.e. a CPU9, to which a command is applied from a main controller, an arithmetic circuit 10 operating the slice area of projection data, a control circuit 11 controlling the slice level, a memory control circuit 12, a reference characteristic parameter memory circuit 13, a measuring characteristic parameter memory circuit 14, and a discriminating circuit 15.
