Summary:PURPOSE:To enable the ignition timing of fuel injected into a combustion chamber to be correctly detected so as to high accurately control an engine, by providing a conductor of light between the combustion chamber and the outside of a cylinder extending through the cylinder. CONSTITUTION:A flame sensor 8 for detecting the ignition timing of fuel injected into a combustion chamber 4 from a fuel injection valve 5 is formed from a tubular housing 9, conductor 10 of light inserted into its center hole and a detecting circuit 11 of light provided in an external end of the conductor 10 of light. The tubular housing 9 is screwed into a cylinder head 2a till the housing reaches the combustion chamber 4, in this way a point end part 10a of the conductor 10 of light is disclosed in the combustion chamber 4. Then light of combustion flame in the combustion chamber 4 is transmitted to the detecting circuit 11 of light through the conductor 10 of light here converted into an electric signal, and this electric signal is fed to an electrical control circuit 12 to detect the ignition timing. Then in accordance with the detected ignition timing, a hydraulic timer or the like in a fuel injection pump is controlled, thus the injection timing is high accurately controlled.
