Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal display cell superior in sharpness and brightness, and suitable for enlargement of its size and formation of a curved face by sealing in liquid crystals between oriented plastic films having their principal orientation directions crossing each other at right angles, and a specified difference of retardation values between them. CONSTITUTION:Liquid crystals are sealed in between two oriented plastic films having their principal orientation directions crossing each other at almost right angles and the difference of retardation values between them not below 200mum. Said principal orientation direction means the direction in which its refractive index becomes max. When said principal orientation directions are parallel to each other, the yield of production of the liquid crystal display cell is low, and raises its cost, so it is not desirable. Twisted nematic type, guest-host type, and dynamic scattering type liquid crystals are used, and above all, the twister nematic type liquid crystals are preferable.
