Summary:PURPOSE:A divalent exchange type synthetic mica is used as a catalyst to effect the dimerization of an alpha-alkylstyrene to enable high-efficiency production of an unsaturated dimer of alpha-alkylstyrene in high selectivity with high catalyst activity even at low temperatures. CONSTITUTION:The dimerization of an alpha-alkylstyrene of the formula (R1 is lower alkyl such as methyl or ethyl; R2 is 1-4C lower alkyl; n is 1-5) is effected in the presence of a catalyst of divalent metal exchange type synthetic mica at 50-160 deg.C, preferably 70-160 deg.C to give the objective compound. The synthetic mica is mainly composed of alamella compound of SiO2 where Si atoms are based on tetrahedral SiO4 and extended as a hexagonal network plane and metal ions distributes between the lamellas. The divalent metal ions are preferably copper and magnesium divalent ions.
