Summary:PURPOSE:To prevent vertical smear from being produced even if a solid-state image pickup element is used by applying an output of one set of gate circuit to a negative side of a subtraction circuit and an output of another set of gate circuit to a positive side relating to a signal obtained from an odd and an even number of row. CONSTITUTION:A signal from an output signal 111 of an image pickup element at an even number field is applied to the positive side of the subtraction circuit 18 via a preamplifier 151 and a gate circuit 172, and a signal from a terminal 112 is applied to the negative side via a gate circuit 173. A signal from the terminal 112 at an even number field is applied to the positive side via a gate circuit 174 and a signal from the terminal 111 is applied to the negative side via the gate circuit 171. When the relation of Ve=a.V0 exists between the vertical smears in this case, a signal obtained from the subtraction circuit 18 at an odd number field is Sout.o=S0+(a-C2).V0. Similarly, the signal obtained from the subtraction circuit 18 at an odd number field is Sout.e=Se+(1-C1.a).V0. In setting C1, C2 (amplification factor of amplifiers 161, 162) to C1=1/a and C2=a, Sout.o=S0, Sout.e=Se, that is, only the optical signal exists, and the vertical smear component is eliminated.
