Summary:PURPOSE:To take out a part of catalyst from the lower part and to supplement a new catalyst from the upper part by providing longutidinally a packed layer having a large sectional area and intersecting orthogonally with the stream of a gas to be treated. CONSTITUTION:Plural partition plates 7 are provided, and the gas to be treated introduced from the lower part of a packed tower 2 is sent upward through the packed layer to the upper part of the packed tower 2, while moving alternately to the left and to the right through several stages constituted by the partition plates 7. Thus the completely reacted gas is taken out from the top. A part of spent catalyst is taken out from the bottom, and the new catalyst is supplemented into the catalyst-packed layer from the top to form a moving catalyst bed. The gas to be treated is brought into contact with the catalyst used for a long time at the bottom layer, and the NOx in the gas is removed. Then the SOx is removed by bringing the gas into contact with the new catalyst at the upper part.
