Summary:PURPOSE:To prevent the electrodes of the electrode substrates of a liq. crystal display element from being seen, by forming a transparent insulating thin film having a specified refractive index between each of orienting films for vertically orienting liq. crystal molecules on the substrate surfaces and each of the substrates. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 5, 5' are partially formed on the opposite surfaces of transparent electrodes 1, 1', and orienting films 6, 6' each having a property of almost vertically orienting the major axes of liq. crystal molecules to the electrode surfaces are formed on the whole electrode surfaces to obtain electrode substrate. At this time, each of transparent insulating thin films 7, 7' of polyamide, polyimide or the like having 1.65-1.85 refractive index which is between the refractive index of the electrode material 5, 5' and that of the films 6, 6' is formed between each of the films 6, 6' and each of the substrates 1, 1' all over. The removal of unnecessary parts by etching or other method is not required, and electrode substrates each having an electrode which is not seen are obtd. by simple printing and drying stages.
