Summary:PURPOSE:To shorten the time required for file operation by omitting the directory transfer between an auxiliary storage device and a master storage device. CONSTITUTION:A directory processing device 6 and a directory storing storage device 7 are connected between an I/O channel 3 and an auxiliary storage controlling device. A file directory is stored in the directory storing storage device 7. A directory processing device 6 reads out a directory from the storage device 7 on the basis of a logical file operation command sent from a central processing unit (CPU)1 through the I/O channel 3, converts an logical address into a physical address by using the directory and generates a physical file operating command for the auxiliary storage device 5.
