Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the low frictional properties, running stability, durability and rust proof properties etc. of a magnetic recording medium, by coating a polymer layer having a siloxane bond on the surface of a magnetic thin film layer. CONSTITUTION:Monomer gas and carrier gas are delivered to a polymerization reaction vessel R from a monomer gas source 1 and a carrier gas source 2 through respective mass flow controllers 3 and 4. The monomer gas is selected from either an org. silicon compound having a siloxane bond which is polymerized in the reaction vessel R or an org. silicon compound capable of forming a siloxane bond by plasma polymerization. The carrier gas is properly selected from Ar, He, H2 and N2 etc. When a high frequency power source 6 is turned on, the low temp. plasma condition is generated between electrodes 7, 7' and a plasma polymerized film is stuck on a migrating magnetic recording medium. As the plasma polymerization is a vapor phase reaction, reacting gas permeates into a micro-cellular recessed part of a magnetic layer.
