PURPOSE:To facilitate an easy decision for the fault factor for an operator, by extracting plural fault factor candidates, setting a sequence to the decision for the fault of each fault factor candidate by a multi-purpose evaluation method and displaying automatically only the designated candidates. CONSTITUTION:A plant 101 is provided with plural component devices 102 and a sensor 104 which detects the state of the device 102. The process quantity of the plant 101 is sent to a fault detector 107 in the form of a detecting signal 105 and then compared with the reference signal. Then a signal 108 is delivered to a fault factor estimating device 109 to decide a non-defect or defect state. The device 109 estimates the fault factor and decide the priority on the basis of the signal 108 and a signal 111 corresponding to the propagating direction from an input device 110 of initial data, propagating time and propagating probability as well as to the fault factor of each device 102. A related state quantity selecting device 117 selects the state value of the device with which an effect emerges quickly and the state quantity can be measured in case an estimated fault factor has a fault after receiving an output signal 116. Then the device 117 delivers the selected state value to a display 113.
