Summary:PURPOSE:To efficiently melt sludge, by bringing the sludge, before fed to a high- temperature furnace bed, into contact with a part of exhaust combustion gas from the high-temperature furnace bed to dry the sludge, and then heating the dried sludge with dehumidified exhaust gas. CONSTITUTION:Sludge, before fed to a high-temperature furnace bed 2, is brought into contact with a part of combustion gas from the high-temperature furnace bed 2, so that the sludge can be dried under a condition having high heat-exchange efficiency. The exhaust gas used for drying is mixed with water and odorous components during drying, and its temperature is lowered. This exhaust gas is adjusted into an easily-combustible state by dehumidifying and heating, in order to inhibit unfavorable temperature-drop in a melting furnace 1. In this way, excellent deodorization can be performed under an economically- advantageous condition by making good use of the existing melting furnace 1. Moreover, the exhaust combustion gas, from the high-temperature furnace bed 2, having a high temperature of 1,200 deg.C or more and containing a small amount of dust can be mixed in the exhaust gas used for drying, to cool the former gas.
