Summary:PURPOSE:To easily eliminate the development of blurred color at the non-display part, by inserting a transparent intermediate electrode layer corresponding to the whole or a part of the reversal pattern of a display pattern in the ionic conductor layer. CONSTITUTION:Divided under transparent electrodes A2a, A2b, EC layers B2a, B2b developing color by oxidation and corresponding to a display pattern in shape, an under ionic conductor layer C1, and an intermediate transparent electrode M corresponding to the reversal pattern of the diaplay pattern in shape are successively laminated on a substrate S. An upper ionic conductor layer C2, an EC layer B1 developing color by reduction, and an upper tansparent electrode A1 are further laminated on the electrode M. Each of the transparent electrode layers is made of SnO2 or the like and has 0.01-0.5mum thickness. The EC substance B1 developing color by reduction is amorphous tungsten trioxide or the like, the ionic conductor of the layer C is tantalum oxide or the like, and the EC substance B2 developing color by oxidation is iridium hydroxide or the like.
