Summary:NEW MATERIAL:A polyprenylaldehyde shown by the formulaI(a group shown by the formula II is isoprene unit of the trans type; a group shown by the formula III is isoprene unit of the cis type; n is 11-19). USE:Useful as a raw material for drugs, cosmetics, etc. and also as an intermediate for synthesizing especially dolichol of mammals. PROCESS:A polyprenyl halide shown by the formula IV (X is halogen) is reacted with an acetoacetic ester shown by the formula V (R is lower alkyl) in the presence of a basic compound to give a polyprenylketocarboxylic ester, which is saponified and decarboxylated to give a polyprenylacetone. This compound is then subjected to Witting reaction with a compound shown by the formula VI, the -CHO protecting group of the reaction product is deprotected, to give a compound shown by the formulaI. The polyprenyl halide shown by the formula IV is directly obtained from an extract of ginkgo or Himalayan ceder or through its hydrolysis.
