Summary: | PURPOSE:Isopropyl chloride and acetone is used as starting materials to effect Grignard reaction, the product is hydrolyzed, dehydrated, the resultant mixture is separated, and 2,3-dimethylbutene-1, a by-product, is isomerized to produce the titled compound easily in high yield. CONSTITUTION:2,3-Dimethylbutene-2 is obtained by the following processes: (a) the preparation of isopropylmagnesium chloride from isopropyl chloride and metallic magnesium, (b) the reaction of the product with acetone, (c) the hydrolysis of the reaction product in (b) in a neutral or weakly acidic medium, (d) the dehydration of the above product in the presence of an acid catalyst such as sulfuric acid into a mixture of 2,3-dimethylbutene-2 and 2,3-dimethylbutene-1, (e) the isolation of 2,3-dimethylbutene-2 from the mixture and (f) the isomerization of the remaining 2,3-dimethylbutene-1 in the process (e) by sending it to the process (d). |
