Summary:PURPOSE:To prepare the titled substance useful as an important synthetic intermediate of vitamin B1 and its analogues, in high yield, by the catalytic reaction of 2-alkyl-4-amino-5-formylpyrimidine with hydrogen and ammonia in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The titled compound is prepared by the catalytic reaction of 2- alkyl-4-amino-5-formylpyrimidine with hydrogen and ammonia at 0-200 deg.C, preferably at room temperature 120 deg.C in the presence of a reduction catalyst under the hydrogen partial pressure of usually 1-100kg/cm G. The effective catalyst is the VIII-group metal such as Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, Ni, etc. or a metal such as Cu, Cr, etc. The amount of the catalyst is 0.001-3g-atom, preferably 0.002-2g-atom in terms of metal based on the above raw material. The amounts of H and ammonia are preferably 5-400mol and 4-500mol per 1mol of the raw material, respectively.
