Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the radiation resistance of an optical fiber, by adding specific range of OH groups to a high purity quartz glass core, and using the core as the core of the optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:The core 1 made of high-purity quartz glass added with 0.1- several % OH groups is covered with the clad 2 to obtain the objective radiation-resistant optical fiber. Experimental results show that the loss increase of the fiber decreases rapidly when the OH concentration added to the core becomes >=1,000ppm. Although the increase of the OH concentration improves the radiation resistance, its upper limit is set to several % because too high concentration results in the deterioration of the strength of the optical fiber. The radiation resistance can be further improved by the addition of fluorine and/or chlorine to the OH-containing core 1.
