Summary:PURPOSE:To omit directory transfer between a main and an auxiliary storage device and to shorten an operation time by providing a directory processor and a storage device for directory storage between the main and auxiliary storage devices. CONSTITUTION:The directory processor FP6 and storage device DS7 for directory storage are provided between the main storage device MS2 and auxiliary storage device AM5. On the basis of logical file operation commands sent from a CUP1, the directory processor 6 reads a directory out of the sotrage device 7 and converts the value of a key into a physical address by using the directory to generate a physical file operation command to the auxiliary storage device 5. Consequently, the transfer of the directory between the main storage device 2 and auxiliary storage device 5 is omitted to shorten the necessary time for file operation.
