Summary:PURPOSE:To facilitate the control of the time and flow rate of tapping and to permit long-term stable tapping by packing the tap hole of a blast furnace with mud materials then driving a suitable ceramic pile into the mud materials to penetrate the hole and closing the hole part of the pile. CONSTITUTION:A tap hole 1 of a blast furnace is packed and closed with mud materials 3 loaded in a mud gun. Before the packed materials 3 sinter and solidify or during the progression of partial sintering, a ceramic pile 5 of the size and shape conforming to the operating conditions of the blast furnace is driven from the approximate center of the materials 3 to the inner side of the furnace so that it is penetrated through the hole 1. The hole part 6 of the pile 5 is packed and closed with the materials 4 whereby the hole 1 is closed. It is possible to control the time and flow rate of tapping by selecting the diameter and wall thikness of the pile 5 suitably and to permit the long-term use of the tap hole simply by driving the pile 5.
