Summary:PURPOSE:To cast a hollow blank material of less surface defects easily by oscillating a cooled mold by the use of ultrasonic waves at the time of teeming molten metal by bottom pouring into the mold and intermittently drawing solidified shells. CONSTITUTION:Molten metal 4 in a molten metal holding vessel 2 is teemed by bottom pouring through a conduit passage 3 into a cooled mold 1 to form a solidified shell 8 on the inside circumferential wall of the mold 1. The melt level in this mold 1 is fluctuated periodically by pressure regulation to induce the successive growth of the shell 8 and this is intermittently drawn to make a hollow blank material. Ultrasonic oscillators 9 are mounted on the outside surface of this mold 1, and ultrasonic waves 3-30kHz frequencies are applied to oscillate the inside circumferential surface of the mold 1 at 1-10mum amplitudes. Then, the outside circumferential surface of the shell 8 adjacent to the inside circumferential surface of the mold 1 receives dynamic impact, and the growth of crystal grains is disturbed to form fine crystals, and besides, dendrite is broken, whereby many cubic crystals are grown and the solidified shell of superior surface characteristics with less cracking and the like is grown.
