Summary:PURPOSE:To increase the depth of penetration without providing any backing and facilitate edge preparation by providing a 1-4mm. clearance to a square groove formed by materials to be welded in plasma arc welding of middle thickness or thick plates. CONSTITUTION:In welding middle thickness plates A, A, a square groove 1 is formed to the plates A, and the clearance delta therebetween is set at 1-4mm.,then the plates are plasma-arc-welded from a top surface F direction. Since a weld zone is formed and a recess 3 is formed in the upper part, filler-added weld beads 4 by a plasma or other welding method are formed in this recess to complete the welding. In welding thick plates B, B having the thickness larger than the depth L of penetration by the plasma arc, a square groove 5 of 1-4mm. clearance is formed in the part corresponding to the L from the top surface, and a single Vee groove 6 is formed in the part above this. The part L is welded by the method similar to that for the middle thickness plates A and the part of the groove 6 is formed with filler- added weld beads 7 from the bottom surface R side by a plasma arc or other welding method.
