Summary:PURPOSE:To make the detection of ingot surface defects and breakout possible by measuring the acceleration waves or speed waves from a vertically moving mold, and measuring the drawing resistance in the mold from the indices obtained by subjecting these values to prescribed processing. CONSTITUTION:While velocity waves or acceleration waves are measured from a vibrating mold, the velocity waves or acceleration waves of <=2,500Hz are taken out from these measured values. The velocity waves and acceleration waves of the time when molten metal is not teemed are substracted respectively from these velocity waves or acceleration waves by time differentiation operation, and the operated acceleration waves and the previous acceleration waves are expressed by the function f(omega') of an angular velocity omega'. Further, the relative speeds shown by the differences between the mold vibrating speed and the ingot drawing speed of the function f(omega') are divided to a positive period and a negative period, and are time averaged by each period, whereby relative indices are determined. From these relative indices, the drawing resistance force in the mold is determined.
